When file sync and share doesn't work

CASE STUDY #1 - When file sync and share doesn't work

File Sync and Share is a good solution for personal users because a single user rarely modifies files on two or more devices at the same time, so conflicts can arise. However, in enterprises with multiple locations and branch offices, file synchronization and sharing poses a problem.

One story we heard was that a potential customer was using Egnyte as a file server solution. An employee changed a file in a branch office. However, that file could not be synchronized with another branch. Unable to synchronize the latest version, another employee used an outdated file for an outbound communication as part of a tender process that later failed. During the post-mortem analysis, the decision was made to try Azure Files as an alternative.

Centralized Cloud File Server Solution

As more companies move to work from home in times of crisis, employees need reliable and efficient ways to access the company's file servers and continue to collaborate on files as if they were still in the office.

Azure storage services such as Windows Azure Blob and Azure Files are reliable cloud storage services to build a cloud file server solution on top.

What is Azure Blob Storage

Windows Azure Blob Storage is a service for storing large amounts of unstructured data that can be accessed from anywhere in the world via HTTP or HTTPS. A single blob can be hundreds of gigabytes in size, and a single storage account can contain up to 100 TB blobs. Common uses for Azure Blob Storage are:

1

Serving images or documents directly to a browser

2

Storing files for distributed access

3

Streaming video and audio

4

Performing secure backup and disaster recovery

5

Storing data for analysis

6

Centralized cloud file server

7

Low cost cloud storage service

What is Azure Files

Azure Files is a cloud service that provides fully managed file shares using industry-standard Server Message Block (SMB) and Network File System (NFS) protocols. The service allows organizations to remove file share infrastructure from on-premises data centers without compromising the user experience. Common uses of Azure Files are:

1

Serving Windows workload in the Azure Cloud

2

Replace or supplement on-premises file servers

3

"Lift and shift" applications

4

Sync on-prem file server to Azure Files

5

Disaster Recovery

6

Centralized cloud file server

7

Supporting legacy applications

Comparing SharePoint/OneDrive, Azure Files and Azure Blob Storage services from Microsoft

SharePoint

Strictly speaking, SharePoint and OneDrive are applications, not storage services. They come with a sync agent for Windows. The user interface is no longer traditional drive mapping.

Azure Files

Azure Files provides SMB backward compatibility with existing Windows applications. It also comes with Azure File Sync to synchronize on-prem file servers and provide Active Directory and Azure AD integration services.

Azure Blob

While Azure Files retains the characteristics of a block storage, Azure Blob Storage Service is inherently an object storage. It is well suited for office documents, PDF, and video editing applications.

What Does it Mean to You?

You want your organization to take advantage of Microsoft Azure data centers and infrastructure for remote employees working from home, but you do not want to write code to use the Azure Storage Service raw interface. You need to find an application that is already integrated with Azure Storage Service and ready to use.

In an analogy, Azure Storage Service is like hard disks in a computer that are hard to use without the Windows file server software sitting on top of the disks. Gladinet can turn Azure Storage Services into a cloud file server service by layering software components on top of the underlying Azure Storage Services.

Gladinet's cloud file server solution includes secure file sharing, remote file access, version control, drive mapping, file locking and data protection. It is a file server application over the Internet.

You can add the following enterprise file sharing features to your Azure Storage services

With your Active Directory providing the necessary identity service and your Windows file server storing the data, Triofox adds the following features to create a private content collaboration solution!

Productivity

Make it easier for your teams to collaborate with customers successfully:

Online File Server Feature Highlights

Outlook Integration

Instead of sending files as Outlook attachments, files and folders can be shared as links via Outlook.

Send Large Files

Improve performance for large file transfers by sending only the changes made instead of synchronizing the entire file.

Share Files and Folders

Files and folders can be turned into weblinks and accessed from web browsers or any mobile client.

Receive Files and Folders

Weblinks can be generated for web browser-based upload to receive files and folders.

Advanced Sharing

Policies such as expiration dates and read/write permissions can be attached to file sharing.

Desktop Integration

File-sharing can be as easy as right-click on a file from within Windows Explorer.

Security

Security

Secure Data Room

Shared folders have optional secure data room features to enable view-only permissions that disable downloads.

Granular Folder

Define different permissions for folders at different levels of the directory structure.

Domain Control

The destination email domain is one of the white list parameters that control who can receive file-sharing invitations.

IP Address Control

The destination IP Address is another parameter to control who can be the receiver for a file-sharing action.

Files and folders over the Internet

For remote mobile workers, drive mapping and file locking are the two basic features for accessing files and folders over the Internet.

Gladinet solutions come with desktop agents that can map a network drive to the underlying Azure storage services, with file locking feature.

In addition, Gladinet's mapped drive has many advanced features. These features include local file caching, transmission error recovery and Internet fault survival, version control and conflict detection, endpoint encryption and protection, and other features.

Collaboration

Co-Editing

Integrates with Office365 to take advantage of built-in co-editing features.

Notification

Keep track of important changes and events in the system.

Microsoft Azure for Cloud File Server

Cloud File Server Features

A cloud file server has a remote mapped drive and these advanced features to make it user-friendly and convenient to use over the Internet.

Local Caching

Local caching can speed up the user's file access by keeping unchanged files on the local disk.

Reliable Transfer

For lengthy file transfers to survive Internet glitches.

Endpoint Encryption

Encrypt files that are in the local cache.

Binary Differential

Binary differential upload can speed up the upload by detecting portions of the file that have been modified.

Version Control

Modifications to files are kept as old revisions in case they are useful in the future.

Conflict Detection

If employees go offline and continue to modify files, the source version of the modification is recorded for later comparison.
