What is IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift

OpenStack Object Storage (Swift) is a scalable redundant storage system. Objects and files are written to multiple disk drives spread throughout servers in the data center, with the OpenStack software responsible for ensuring data replication and integrity across the cluster. - Wikipedia

Like the OpenStack Swift system on which it is based, SoftLayer Object Storage is a scalable redundant object storage system. Files are accessed more on per-file level than per-block level and it can scale out quickly with redundancy built in.

One of the primary benefits of Object Storage is the role that it can play in automating and streamlining data storage in cloud computing environments. SoftLayer Object Storage offers rich metadata features and search capability that can be leveraged to automate the way unstructured data gets accessed. In this way, SoftLayer Object Storage will provide organizations with new capabilities for improving overall data management and storage efficiency. - http://blog.softlayer.com/2012/softlayer-softlayer-swift-softlayer-object-storage/

What Does it Mean to You?

For your business, you would like to take advantage of your own infrastructure and accounts with SoftLayer, but you don't want to write code to use the raw IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift interface. You need to find an application that is already integrated with IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift and ready to use.

Why Gladinet Cloud?

Gladinet Cloud works with IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift to provide simple online collaboration, online file storage, offsite backup and team workspace solution. Just sign up for an account and it is ready to use. If you want a self-hosted solution, you can also download and install the Gladinet Cloud Enterprise.

What are the Main Features?

Access Your Files Anywhere

Gladinet Cloud provides access methods to IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift from a web browser, native desktop client, iOS App, Android App, Windows Phone 8 and file server. When you are on the road, you can use the mobile applications to access your files. When you are in the office, you can connect to your on-premise file server for access. You can also access them from your desktop at home or use a web browser from any location on any client.

Seamlessly Migrate Local Folders to IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift

Gladinet provides unique synchronization technology that allows you to attach local folders to cloud storage. Attaching a folder means that its contents immediately become accessible to any device from any location (even before the sync is finished). It also means that the attached folder will be synchronized with the cloud and any changes made in the cloud from a remote mobile device will be synchronized back to the attached folder. This is a powerful solution with no bulk ingestion roadblocks.

Collaborate with Team Folders

Administrators of the team account can create team folders for collaboration. Once a team folder is created and assigned to a user or group, the team folder will appear in the root of their Gladinet drive. Users can lock/unlock files, add comments and setup notifications.

Security Features

Gladinet Cloud enhances IBM SoftLayer OpenStack Swift by providing encryption, file locking, auditing and permission control at the folder level, with client-side enforcement.

Share Files and Folders

You can share folders and files with your team members. Team members receiving these shares will see the files and folders under the "Files Shared with me" folder. You can assign read-only permission or full access to the shared items. You can also share folders and files with someone outside your team, who doesn't have a Gladinet Cloud account. They can receive read-only access, protected by a password.

File Server Migration

Gladinet Cloud Server Agent is part of the Gladinet Cloud. By connecting your OpenStack Swift cloud storage to a file server, multiple office users can then connect to the file server without a Gladinet client through file shares on the LAN. This has multiple benefits. For example, it unifies file structures across multiple sites into a single namespace and can be used to seamlessly migrate your existing file server to the cloud.

User Management and Active Directory Integration

If you have at least one Gladinet Cloud Server installed inside your active directory domain, it can serve as the authentication integration server helping to import active directory users into your Gladinet Cloud team account, with single sign-on. You can also setup LDAPS if it is available. End result is you can access OpenStack Swift Cloud Storage, with your own Active Directory identity.
