How to use Mirrored Folder

Mirrored folder is a new feature in Gladinet 2.0.

User can define a folder in virtual directory as a mirrored folder. Once the folder is in the mirrored list, Gladinet will download all files in the folder in local cache. It is much faster to access them. Gladinet regularly checks the files in the folder against the cloud storage. If there is any change in the storage, Gladinet will automatically download the file, to maintain an accurate sync with local cache.

One way to use mirrored folder is to setup the same folder as mirrored in 2 machines. Modify the file in one machine and the other machine should see the changes automatically.

  • To avoid any performance impact, Gladinet only checks the files directly under the mirrored folder. It will not check any subfolders.
  • When make changes in the mirrored folder in the cloud storage, there may be a small gap when Gladinet notices the change and download it automatically. The max gap is defined in Cached Control Settings, as ‘Cache Purge Interval’. By default, it is 10 minutes.

Add folders in Mirrored Folder List

  • Open Virtual Directory Manager from Gladinet systray menu

How to Enable Chunk

If cloud storage supports, Gladinet can chunk large files to small pieces before upload them. It can be used when the storage posts a limit on file size. It improves the transfer speed. Each chunk can be uploaded simultaneously. If one piece fails, Gladinet will only retry that single piece, instead of the whole big file. Smaller files are much easier to upload/download.

In Gladinet version 2.0, chunk can be enabled/disabled per virtual directory.

NOTICE: Once the file is chunked, it will be stored as multiple files in cloud storage. Accessing it from the storage directly, for example, from cloud storage’s own web interface, will only show the multiple files. It has to be downloaded by Gladinet client to restore to the original format.

Enable Chunk in Virtual Directory

Back in Gladinet 1.x, chunk can only be enabled/disabled globally. It affected all the virtual directories. In 2.0, it can be defined per virtual directory.

  • Open Virtual Directory Manager from Gladinet systray menu

  • Go to ‘Virtual Directories’. Click ‘Config Virtual Directory’ icon to open the virtual directory configuration window.
  • If chunk is supported by the storage, the configuration window should display the check box to enable chunking. Select it.
  • The chunk size can be defined per virtual directory too. The default value is 20M (20480K).
  • Remember to click ‘Apply’ after the changes.

Chunk001

  • Drag&drop files to the cloud storage. If the file size is larger than the chunk size defined, Gladinet will split the file in pieces, based on the chunk size.

How to Use Compression

Gladinet 2.0 supports compression.

User needs to define which virtual directory supports compression, and the type of files to be compressed.

Once defined, when upload files to the virtual directory, Gladinet will check file type. If the file should be compressed, Gladinet will compress the file first, then send the compressed copy to the virtual directory. When download the file, it will be de-compressed automatically.

Compression can save space in cloud storage and make upload/download faster.

User can add folders in the compressed folder list.

How to Use Encryption

Gladinet 2.0 supports encryption.

To use the encryption, user needs to define a password first. After the password is defined, user can select folders in existing virtual directories. Once a virtual directory is added in the list, all files uploaded will be encrypted with the password. When download the file, user needs the right password to decrypt it.

Please notice that the existing files in the folder won’t be encrypted. Only the newly uploaded files will be.

Set Password

To set the password, open Gladinet Management Console and go to ‘Encrypted Folders’. Click the ‘Set Password’ icon.

Please remember the password. All files uploaded to encrypted folders are encrypted with the password. Gladinet can’t retrieve it. Once lost, cannot decrypt all files uploaded.

Gladinet Cloud Desktop For Google Docs (GDrive)

With Google’s introduction of support for any file type in their storage offering, the GDrive rumors continue to gain strength. In fact, many now refer to the new offering as GDrive, given the existing capabilities of Google Docs in combination with Google Storage. But how can you have a GDrive service that has no local drive? Gladinet Cloud Desktop answers that question by providing a mapped network drive interface to Google Storage. This enables you to actually put GDrive on G:\, so you can manage your files in Google Storage exactly as you would on a local hard drive. Google Storage access doesn’t get any simpler than that!

Google

Create and share your work online

  • Upload from and save to your desktop
  • Edit anytime, from anywhere
  • Pick who can access your documents
  • Share changes in real time
  • Files are stored securely online
  • It’s free!
  • Google Storage: How it works

Google offers a way to purchase more storage space when you run out of free storage space in Gmail, Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums and Blogger (for photos).

    Free storage

Free storage space is specific to each product. Picasa Web Albums offers 1 GB of storage for photos and videos only. Gmail provides 7+ GB. Docs gives you 1 GB for everything: all of your docs, spreadsheets, presentations, and uploaded files. Free storage from one product cannot be used by or transferred to another product.

Paid Storage – Just $.02 per GB!

When you run out of free storage for any product, you can purchase additional storage that is shared between products. This shared storage can be used for Picasa Web Albums uploads, Gmail messages, Docs content or a mix of all three – it will be used by any product that’s over its free storage quota on a first-come, first-served basis.
