OpenStack Swift is kind of like a hard drive, which is not designed to be used directly but as a building block behind a tool like Windows Explorer or a file sharing platform such as a Windows file server. Its object store nature makes backup and archival the most popular application now on OpenStack Swift. With CentreStack, data center providers can add secure access and file sharing, business continuity and disaster recovery to their offering.
CentreStack uses its OpenStack Swift API integration and your on-premises file servers to create hybrid cloud file servers with mobile access and secure file sharing over the Internet.
CentreStack File Server Agent installed on the file server that will migrate to OpenStack Swift over time. Supports Windows 2003/2008/2012/2016/2019 (32-bit/64-bit).
If the file server is in the same network as the CentreStack server, a direct connection is also possible (see Option #2). The file server is optional if you have other ways to migrate data to OpenStack swift or just want a simple mapped drive to access the files and folders.
If you've already migrated local file server data into the same data center where the OpenStack infrastructure is, CentreStack can be used to provide a direct file access solution for remote and mobile devices.
CentreStack file server integration and enablement installs agent software on your file server or directly mounts your file server's network shares into CentreStack when direct access is available. It intelligently manages local and cloud storage together to provide a range of cloud enablement options.
Most importantly, the active directory security model is maintained with NTFS permissions as if it was never changed and end users get a familiar drive letter to access files from remote locations. File locking is also maintained for multiple users collaborating on the same file at the same time.
The end result is that the file server network shares are synchronized into OpenStack and CentreStack provides a complete access solution from Windows mapped drives and Mac Finder mounted volumes to iOS and Android applications that need to access OpenStack swift storage securely.
Attach local file server folders to your CentreStack server. Once attached, they become accessible online, enabling remote access. At the same time, the original network shares remain accessible over the local area network.
Alternatively, file server content can be migrated over time to OpenStack swift in a hybrid environment. In addition to remote access, this enables a background backup process for business continuity.
Create a global name space unifying different file servers with a single directory structure, enabling multi-site collaboration. It is a distributed file system in the cloud, backed by OpenStack Swift.
You can also leverage the features above by using the existing file server from OpenStack nova Virtual Machines in the open infrastructure.
