Google Docs Related Issues
With all file upload supported in Google Docs, more and more users are using Google Docs. Here are some common Google Docs related issues.
Conversion in Google Docs
When upload files to Google Docs web interface, you can choose to convert the file to Google Docs format.
For documents like doc/xls/ppt files, once converted, the file can be edited in Google Docs web directly. The file doesn't count to the space used for all file type upload. However, the file format may be lost.
File converted has smaller size limit. For example, document has to be smaller than 500K. And the filename can not be longer than 66 characters.
When upload Office 2007 format files like docx/xlsx/pptx, once it is converted, it can't be downloaded in the same format anymore. It can only be downloaded in Office 2003 format.
If the document file is not converted, it will be stored in the original format.
In our 1.4 release, when the file is uploaded without conversion, Gladinet can't update the file anymore. It is fixed in 2.0.
In 2.0, you can enable or disable the conversion. When conversion is enabled, you can define the type of files to be converted. See the how-to here for details.
How much storage you have for any file upload
Free users have 1G free space. You can check how much has used from Google Manage Storage page.
When upload the file in Google Docs web interface, click 'Upload' and Google Docs will tell you the usage and total space too.
All files are 1K
That, in fact, is a Google Docs limit. When list files in Google Docs folders, Google Docs doesn't return the file size. The size information is only available when you actually download the file. Since size is required when display the file in Windows Explorer, Gladinet set all files to 1K. We'll keep monitoring Google Docs interface. Once it is fixed, we'll update our software.
Cannot Enable Google Docs Conversion
Q: I set Google Docs Conversion to TRUE. However, my file is not converted. And the setting is set back to false.
A: When you enable the conversion in Gladinet, the change will be auto saved. After the change, in Gladinet Management Console, you can click other menu like Dashboard, then go back to settings manager to verify that it is enabled.
When you upload a doc file with conversion enabled, you'll get a confirm window, telling you that "the document will be converted. Do you want to disable it?". You have to click 'No' here, to not disable conversion.
If you don't see the window, most probably you have seen it before and make a choice here. And you also checked "Don't show this message next time.". If you have selected 'Yes', together with the check for not-show-the-message, Gladinet will not prompt you anymore and always disable the conversion.
The message is displayed because some new Google Docs users have no idea that documents may be converted. We have to let them know in a way.
There is no recovery from Gladinet UI, when Gladinet is told to disable the conversion automatically. You have to manually delete the setting file. After that, Gladinet will prompt you the initial settings, when you restart, including re-enter the license key. Here is the procedure.
- Shut down Gladinet.
- Go to
- (XP) C:\Documents and Settings\yourLogin\Local Settings\Application Data\Gladinet
(Vista) C:\Users\yourLogin\AppData\Local\Gladinet
- (XP) C:\Documents and Settings\yourLogin\Local Settings\Application Data\Gladinet
- Delete gsettings.db here.
- Restart Gladinet.
After that, when conversion is enabled and you get the warning message again, please select 'No' here. If you don't want to see the message again, you can check the not-show-the-message box.
Cannot display certain folders in Gladinet Drive
Q: Most of my folders in Google Docs/Google Docs for Google Apps are fine. However, Gladinet can't display one specific folder.
A: Most probably there are special characters in file names or folder names in the folder.
Google Docs is very flexible at the folder name (Label name). However, when display the folder in Gladinet Drive, Windows Explorer doesn't support certain characters.
Here are the list of special characters Windows Explorer doesn't support.
- backslash \
- slash /
- Asterisk *
- Colon :
- Question Mark ?
- Qutation Mark "
Less-Than <
Greater-Than >
- Vertical Line |
And windows doesn't support folder name with the following trailing characters.
- period (.) For example, "U.S.A."
- space ( ) For example, "Test Folder "
